Accumulation

Accumulation is constructed of thrown parts put together with hand building to create a sculptural whole. It is part of a series that began with three-legged more abstractly figurative forms and progressed to three-legged organic basket forms with complex additions instead of “handles”. In this particular work the idea was of an accumulation of volumes or abstractions of vessels that reinforce each other, but grow out of a three-part base. I am concerned with the movement of the form as it grows upward from the base. The movement needs to travel off center in some direction that may be precarious before it returns to a sense of stability and resolution. The form should ultimately be stable enough to stand, but not static. Different views should provoke questions about how the form evolves and not be predictable. The surface should also have variety in color and texture as well as serve to integrate all the elements of the form.
The materials are earthenware clay and low fire dry glazes fired in moderate reduction in a gas kiln.
